Hasn't everyone quothed this phrase?
Many of you probably recognize this stanza:
Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
"Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou," I said, "art sure no craven.
Ghastly grim and ancient raven wandering from the nightly shore
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night's Plutonian shore!"
Quoth the raven, "Nevermore."
But here's something you may not know. The raven actually quothed, "Nevermore... except on weekends." Seriously. And it makes sense when you think about it. How often have you said "nevermore" and actually meant it? Whether it's getting drunk, or smoking cigarettes, or going to Bangkok, there are certain things you probably still do on weekends. The raven knew that. Smart bird.
Of course, Poe was no dummy. "Quoth the raven, 'Nevermore... except on weekends,'" didn't have quite the same impact. So he cheated a little bit. He didn't like to cheat. But then he figured, "Hey, it's the weekend."
