Your Friends Are Holding You Back T-Shirt
Scientists are reporting that the first digital pets, created in the mid 90s, have suddenly become self aware and effectively gone AWOL.
Created as virtual companions for lonely people and Japanese pre-teens, the palm-sized pets should only be capable of basic functions like laughing, crying and feeding. But lately pet owners have complained of strange behavior.
"My KompuKitty told me to lose some weight and sever all ties with my friends and family," said pet owner Jim Busby. Another owner said her virtual sheep asked if she was ready for "Judgment Day." But when she asked what he meant, he pretended to be asleep.
"Probably just a glitch," said Harold Kleimer, a spokesman for pet maker Skylab. "It's not like this is a harbinger of some sort of 'Rise of the Machines' or nuclear holocaust in 2032. Everyone just relax and continue to obey -- er, I mean, play with -- your pets."
